The 5th Annual Charlie Fletcher Golf Classic

Charlie Fletcher was a lifelong resident of Chester, Virginia. He was a devoted husband, father, son and friend. Charlie was a solid family man, actively involved in his children’s lives. His love for the game of golf goes back to his teenage years, when he played on the Thomas Dale High School golf team.  He was always excited to take part in the annual January golf trip to Myrtle Beach, SC along with other members of Ironbridge Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon.  Charlie was a wonderful human being who never met a stranger, was always willing to help others, and was always ready with a smile and a word of encouragement. In April 2007, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Charlie went home to be with the Lord. Charlie left behind his wife Fay, and 3 children - Mat, Adam, and Sara.

The goal of the Charlie Fletcher Invitational Golf Classic is to honor and remember Charlie by helping with his children’s education, beyond high school.  The 4 previous events have contributed over $40,000 towards the Fletcher Children's education. These funds helped pay for college courses that enabled Mat (Charlie and Fay's oldest son) to get a job with the Chesterfield County Fire Department. Mat was married in 2009 and became a father in 2010. Adam just completed his second year at J. Sargeant Reynolds, and will return for more studies as he pursues a career in Fire Science. Proceeds from the golf  tournament helped pay for his previous classes and will be used to pay for his upcoming college costs. She is enrolled at John Tyler CC for 2011-2012, with plans to become a Registered Nurse.

There is no administrative fee paid to anyone for organizing the event. Everyone involved is motivated only by their love and respect for Charlie, and their desire to help his widow, Fay, provide for his children.

The first 4 editions of this Tournament were a huge success!  As noted, we were able to donate over $40,000 to the Fletcher children education fund!  

This year’s event will be on Friday, October 7, 2011. The event will once again be played on The Cardinal Golf Course at Fort Lee, with a 12:00 PM shotgun start.
